Peasants (chłopi)

Contrary to common belief, peasant ancestors can often be researched several generations back. The backbone is estate inventories (listing peasant households as early as the 16th–17th century), village community and court books, post-emancipation indemnification files (Galicia from 1848, Russian partition from 1864, Prussian partition from 1823), and cadastral records showing how much land a specific peasant held and where it was located.
