Land records

Land and mortgage books record who acquired a property, when, and from whom, what encumbrances existed (marriage settlements, debts, life tenancies), and how the estate passed to the heirs.

See also: cadastral records — land books tell you who owned the property; cadastral maps show whereexactly it stood. Together they reconstruct the full history of a family farm.
