Village court records (księgi sądowe wiejskie)

Village court books (mayor’s and jury’s books) were kept in many Polish villages from the 16th to the 18th century. They recorded land sales and purchases, inheritance divisions among siblings, pre-nuptial contracts, debts, and neighbourly disputes. For many peasant families they are the only documents pre-dating the modern civil registers.
