Vital records (births, marriages, deaths)

Vital records — births, marriages, and deaths — are the foundation of any genealogical research. Kept by Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, and Jewish communities, and later by civil registry offices, they record the names of parents, witnesses, dates, places, and professions.
